Aisha Yesufu, a self-styled activist and prominent supporter of Peter Obi, has struggled to explain her family’s lavish lifestyle in a drawn-out squabble with critics on Twitter who rehashed her spouse’s alleged corruption at the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Aliu Yesufu, the activist’s husband, left his role as the General Manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme under controversial circumstances, with multiple allegations of funds diversion and misappropriation.
At the same time, his family, including his activist wife, maintained a wealthy lifestyle characterized by regular foreign trips for holidays and shopping, expensive schools where fees are charged in American dollars among other lavish indulgences.
Although Aisha Yesufu has long portrayed herself as a business entrepreneur, critics insist that her stupendous wealth, previously concealed from the public before it was unearthed in a brawl, cannot be explained by meagre dealings in chicken feed and other businesses she purportedly operates
The criticism was reechoed today when she came at loggerheads with Jeff Philips who accused her of hypocrisy and demanded that she explained how her husband was able to afford all the above-mentioned indulgences on an average salary as a public officer.
Aisha Yesufu failed to provide an explanation and instead defended her husband’s innocence with the claim that he was yet to be convicted. In his rebuttal, Jeff explained that a lack of conviction is not proof of innocence, while also reminding the activist of her rich history of attacking the integrity and uprightness of other public servants who equally suffer no legal conviction.
The squabble, which prompted Aisha Yesufu to embark on a tweet spree full of invectives, adds to the dilemma of the activist who continues to face questions from donors over her handling of funds contributed personally to her during the elections. Aisha reportedly hosted several public donations meant to help the emergence of Peter Obi of the Labour Party. Since the candidate’s comprehensive defeat, she has failed to provide an account of how the funds were spent.
