The United States has confirmed that it has no plans to establish a military base in Nigeria contrary to rumours making the round that it was set to build a military base in Nigeria.
Some days ago, a couple of northern leaders alleged that the US and French governments have been lobbying Nigeria establish military presence in the northern part of the country, which would allow them to redeploy the troops that have been expelled from some French West and Central African countries under military rule.
The northern leaders went as far as writing a letter to President Bola Tinubu where they warned that the presence of foreign military bases would worsen already strained relations between Nigeria and its neighbouring French countries.
However the US government through its Acting Ambassador to Nigeria, David Greene has come out to deny the reports.
In a TVC interview monitored by Podium Reporters, Greene said, “I am not aware of any such conversation, and I am not really sure whose purpose it serves to agitate on this point.”
“We will continue our very strong security cooperation with the Nigerian security services, the Nigerian military, and the Nigerian government, and that will always be in a spirit of partnership and respect for each other”, the Ag. Ambassador affirmed.
