The online community in Nigeria has erupted in heated reactions after claims surfaced that both the audio and text used to defend Peter Obi’s son, Oseloka Obi, were artificially generated.
The controversy began when a viral post alleged that an AI-generated audio recording and a machine-written text were deployed on social media to exonerate Oseloka from accusations linking him to controversial remarks. Nigerians, however, expressed outrage, accusing Obi’s supporters of resorting to artificial intelligence to shape public opinion.
Several Nigerians took to social media platforms to vent their frustrations.
One user, @naija_pr, wrote on X:
“So both the text and the audio defending Oseloka were generated by AI? This is peak desperation. You can’t defend lies with machines.”
Another commenter, @ifeomaWrites, said:
“This is embarrassing. Instead of addressing issues with facts, you are using AI to manipulate people’s emotions. We deserve honesty.”
Similarly, @abdulrahmanTalks argued that the tactic undermines public trust in political discourse:
“The moment we start using AI to script our defense narratives, democracy becomes a joke. If Oseloka is innocent, let evidence speak — not fake voices and texts.”
Critics further linked the development to the broader problem of misinformation in Nigeria’s political space. Some suggested that using AI-generated materials to sway opinions was not only deceptive but also dangerous in an election-sensitive climate.
A Facebook post by Obidient Realist Forum read:
“Supporters should stop embarrassing Peter Obi. This AI nonsense is only fueling suspicion and giving his opponents more weapons to attack him.”
The controversy highlights a growing challenge in Nigeria: the use of AI-driven content in political debates. With technology making it easier to fabricate realistic-sounding audio and persuasive texts, the public faces increasing difficulty in distinguishing truth from manipulation.
For Oseloka Obi, the backlash reflects not just skepticism toward his personal defense but also the fragility of credibility in an era where artificial intelligence can be wielded to distort narratives.
