Atiku Abubakar has continued his daunting streak of losses in court following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of his suit seeking the disqualification of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima as presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over claims of ‘double nomination’.
The PDP had claimed that Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the provisions of sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022.
The opposition party argued that Shettima’s nomination to contest the position of vice-president and Borno central senatorial seat simultaneously was in violation of the law. But a five-member panel of the supreme court ruled on Friday that the PDP lacked the locus standi to bring the suit given its lack of membership in the APC.
The defeat, which dents Atiku and Obi’s petitions at the tribunal because they echo similar claims, marks a continuation of successive losses for the opposition in court as Tinubu prepares for swearing-in on Monday.
