A wave of criticism has engulfed former President Olusegun Obasanjo after his remarks questioning Nigeria’s ability to meet expectations.
Twitter became the platform of choice for Nigerians who openly tore into the ex-president’s statements.
During his keynote address at the book unveiling of ‘Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,’ authored by Olusegun Aganga, former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Obasanjo expressed his dismay at Nigeria’s failure to live up to its potential since gaining independence over six decades ago.
He made it clear that the country’s shortcomings had not only let down its own people but also Africa and the rest of the world.
The backlash on social media was fierce, as numerous Nigerians voiced their anger through rhetorical questions.
They questioned whether Obasanjo, as a former Nigerian president, had taken sufficient action to address the nation’s challenges during his 11-year stint at the helms.
@iu_wakili: Out of the 63 years of Nigeria’s existence Olusegun Obasanjo ruled Nigeria for 11 years yet he have the effrontery to say Nigeria has failed Africa and the world.
Nigeria didn’t fail Africa and the world sir, You and few others failed Nigerians, Africans and The Whole world!!
@UHManga_: i hate this man. No one had the chance of laying a good foundation for better and new nigeria like him instead he messed up everything and left without fixing even one of Nigeria’s major problems. he created even more problems for us
@Zuchradio: He is part of the problem we are facing today and we won’t seperate the message from the messanger this time,
@yomiadetunji: Obasanjo has disappointed Nigerian and worst he has also disappointed himself twice at leadership in Nigeria.
