The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike, has openly criticized certain leaders of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their support of the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara. This statement was made during a press interaction in Abuja.
The controversy stems from a declaration of support for Governor Fubara by prominent PDP figures in Rivers State, including Abiye Sekibo, former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, ex-governorship aspirant Celestine Omehia, and former lawmaker Austin Opara. Their endorsement of Fubara prompted a call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike².
Wike responded assertively, dismissing the political influence of Sekibo, Secondus, Omehia, and Opara, labeling them as “expired politicians” who no longer hold relevance within the party. He further emphasized that Secondus’s suspension from the PDP had been upheld by the court, effectively severing his ties with the party.
This clash highlights the ongoing tensions within the PDP in Rivers State and reflects the broader challenges faced by the party as it navigates internal divisions and prepares for future electoral contests. Wike’s remarks have sparked discussions about the stability of the party’s structure in the state and the potential impact on its political strategies moving forward
