The Organised Labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other labour centers, has suspended its nationwide strike for five days to allow for uninterrupted meetings of the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage to reach a possible agreement.
Labour leaders on Monday evening met with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, the National Security Adviser and other government officials. During the meeting, the SGF revealed that the federal government on its part is committed to paying a minimum wage that is above N60,000 and called on labour to return to the negotiating table.
The SGF also said the tripartite committee would be meeting everyday for the next one week to arrive at an agreeable national minimum wage and therefore schedule a meeting of the Tripartite Committee for Tuesday by 10am.
Ahead of the scheduled meetings, the Labour unions decided to suspend the strike for five days. Consequently, all government and private establishments nationwide are expected to reopen and resume operations.
