In recent times, Bauchi State has been embroiled in allegations of corruption implicating high-ranking officials and close associates of the state’s leadership. Central to these allegations is Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, son of Governor Bala Mohammed, and the Commissioner of Finance, Yakubu Adamu. It is alleged that they have utilized a network of companies to divert state funds for personal enrichment. All in a bid to run for Guber and Senatorial seats in 2027.
Alleged Conduit Companies for Diverting State Funds
1. RZI Ventures Global Resorts: This company is purportedly used to disburse monthly stipends to Shamsudeen and his associates. Owned by a friend of Shamsudeen, it is alleged that the Commissioner of Finance employs this entity for various financial transactions benefiting the governor’s son.
2. Dreamlabs Nigeria Ltd: Owned by another associate of Shamsudeen, this company allegedly had its accounts managed by the Finance Commissioner. Over a span of four years, it functioned as a ‘revenue consultant’ before the commissioner secured his governmental appointment through Shamsudeen’s influence.
3. Courtville Business Solutions: Currently serving as the consulting firm for the state’s revenue and salary payment systems, this company was reportedly introduced by Shamsudeen and Yakubu Adamu.
4. Ayab Agro Allied: Owned and managed by the Commissioner of Finance himself, this company has allegedly received billions in state funds through the aforementioned entities.
- These recent allegations are not isolated incidents. In February 2017, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed faced a 20-count charge of money laundering. He was accused of making cash payments totaling N1.2 billion for property acquisitions in Abuja, violating the Money Laundering Act by not processing these transactions through financial institutions. To conceal the origins of the funds, he allegedly funneled money through companies such as Bird Trust Agro Allied Limited, Intertrans Global Logistic Ltd, Diakin Telecommunications Ltd, and Bal-Vac Mining Nigeria Ltd. Although he pleaded not guilty and the case was eventually struck out by the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2023 due to insufficient evidence, the shadow of these allegations continues to loom over the state’s leadership.
These developments have sparked public outrage, with citizens and civil society organizations calling for thorough investigations and accountability. The alleged misuse of state funds, coupled with attempts to suppress journalistic inquiry, paints a troubling picture of governance in Bauchi State. It underscores the need for transparency, adherence to the rule of law, and the protection of press freedom to uphold democratic principles and ensure that public office is used for the collective good, not personal gain.
The allegations of corruption in Bauchi State highlight systemic issues that require immediate attention. The purported involvement of high-ranking officials and their associates in diverting state resources, coupled with efforts to intimidate the press, threatens the foundations of good governance and democracy. It is imperative for relevant authorities to conduct impartial investigations, hold those responsible accountable, and implement measures to prevent such malfeasance in the future. Above all they all must be made to face the music
