In a significant cultural ceremony held on Tuesday, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was honoured with the prestigious chieftaincy title of ‘Ugosimba 1 of Enugu’ by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council. The title, meaning “jewel” or “eagle from another kingdom,” was bestowed upon her during her official two-day working visit to the state.
Chairman of the Council, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, outlined the reasons behind the conferment, highlighting Senator Tinubu’s dedication to Enugu State, her humanitarian service, and her national developmental efforts. “You served three terms in the Senate and were honoured with the Commander of the Order of Niger. But beyond politics, we admire your compassion for the less privileged, your support for nurses and midwives, and your work in uplifting humanity,” he remarked.
Senator Tinubu, in her acceptance speech, conveyed deep gratitude to the people of Enugu, describing the state as peaceful and welcoming. She noted that the honour was a reflection not only of her personal achievements but also of the Tinubu family’s commitment to Nigeria’s progress. “This is a special honour that I will cherish forever. I love your state—it is calm and welcoming. As you have honoured me today, Enugu State will be remembered for good,” she affirmed.
The conferment underscores the First Lady’s broad influence, extending from politics to impactful humanitarian work, and strengthens her ties with the people of Enugu State.
