A deadly explosion caused by a suspected IPOB/ESN planted landmine rocked Eke Ubaheze Market in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, claiming six lives and injuring five others. The blast occurred when Ngozi Umeh, a middle-aged woman from the village, accidentally stepped on the device, triggering the explosion that sent shockwaves through the local community.
The incident unfolded on June 24, 2025, around 2:30 PM, sparking widespread fear among residents of Ubaheze and surrounding areas. Confirmations from multiple local sources indicate that six people died as a result of the blast, with several others seriously wounded.
The Imo State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the explosion. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that the command is treating the incident with utmost seriousness. “The Imo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation, following an unfortunate incident that occurred on June 24, 2025, about 14:30 hours, at Eke Ubaheze Market Square, Awo-Idemili in Orsu Local Government Area, Imo State, where an IED detonated, resulting in the death of one person and injury to five others,” he said.
Okoye added that preliminary findings suggest the landmine was planted by IPOB/ESN terrorists. Ngozi Umeh was critically injured and later died in hospital, while five others remain hospitalized with injuries.
Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma responded swiftly by deploying Explosive Ordnance Disposal units and tactical teams to secure the scene, evacuate victims, and conduct a thorough search for additional explosive devices. The area has since been declared safe, and normal market activities have resumed under increased security presence.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department has been tasked with a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The police have expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged residents to remain calm, reassuring them of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.
