Dr. Deji Adeleke, a prominent Nigerian entrepreneur and academic leader, has confirmed the completion of his 1250 megawatt power generating facility in Ajebamidele, Ondo State. This landmark project, currently awaiting integration with the national gas pipeline, is expected to soon begin operations, offering employment opportunities to more than 2,000 engineers and workers linked with the sector.
The announcement came during Adeleke University’s convocation ceremony in Osun State, where Dr. Adeleke’s younger brother, Governor Ademola Adeleke, was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree, symbolizing a moment of achievement for the family and the institution. Dr. Adeleke used the platform to criticize Nigeria’s flawed electoral system, warning that “the global community regards Nigeria’s democracy as fraudulent,” which discourages potential foreign investors.
He highlighted how malpractice in elections, from vote-selling by the electorate to the use of thugs to influence results, severely undermines confidence in leadership choices. “The powerplant is ready, I am only waiting to be connected to the gas grid to start generating power. That plant will employ over 2,000 engineers and other associated workers,” he revealed.
Dr. Adeleke further emphasized how fragile partnerships, exemplified by his dealings with GE turbine suppliers, could have halted the project if not for personal relationships. “Nobody wants to come to society where votes do not count and where the electorate do not have a say,” he said.
