With security challenges in West Africa becoming increasingly multifaceted, ECOWAS has escalated calls for synchronized police operations among its member nations.
During a high-level gathering in Abuja, the ECOWAS Police Focal Point Officers meeting became a springboard for renewed discussion on peace support mechanisms and the readiness of regional police for deployment under the Standby Force.
Sani Adamu, representing the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, highlighted the purpose of the session as both strategic and corrective.
“This meeting… has to do with attacks in respective countries, cyber threats, and crime issues,” he said, describing the effort as pivotal for creating a secure regional climate.
Adamu added that collaboration must be the cornerstone of regional stability: “There is no better situation than working together with other players in the security sector.”
Police leaders from across the region examined progress in officer training and operational frameworks. The aim, officials agreed, is not just rapid crisis response but a long-term commitment to peace and safety.
Representatives from Sierra Leone and Nigeria emphasized interoperability and the personal rapport among focal point officers as essential in the evolving security matrix.
