Amid mounting pressure from organised labour, the Federal Government has appointed Mr. Opeyemi Agbaje as Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
The NLC had recently demanded compliance with the Pension Reform Act of 2014 by threatening industrial action if the PenCom board was not constituted. The union also sought a detailed account of pension funds.
Top labour figures and industry officials confirmed the development, although PenCom spokesperson, Ibrahim Buwal, cautioned that “there was no official confirmation from the presidency yet.”
Agbaje is the CEO of RTC Advisory Services Ltd, with extensive experience in business policy and financial systems. His qualifications include a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Lagos and an MBA from Spain’s IESE Business School.
Observers say his appointment may ease tensions with labour groups and reinforce governance structures in Nigeria’s pension sector.
