Fresh controversy has erupted around Nigeria’s political opposition figures as the lawyer who represented Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi during the 2019 presidential election has been accused of involvement in identity fraud.
The development, first shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @g0adm, has reignited debate about the judgment and integrity of the political camp that paraded itself as an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Questions over Atiku and Obi’s judgment
The indictment, though yet to be fully detailed, raises troubling questions about why Atiku and Obi relied on such a controversial figure in their legal battle against President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory. Many Nigerians are now asking whether this reflects a broader pattern of questionable alliances within their camp.
Critics argue that if those aspiring to lead the country surround themselves with individuals later linked to fraud or corruption, it casts doubt on their ability to deliver the transparent governance they promise.
Not the first scandal linked to Atiku’s camp
This is not the first time Atiku’s close associates have been dragged into financial or legal controversies. In 2020, Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie, another lawyer to Atiku, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged laundering of $2 million. Although he pleaded not guilty, the case highlighted concerns over the financial dealings of those within Atiku’s circle.
By extension, the new fraud allegation against the 2019 joint legal team now strengthens perceptions that both Atiku and Obi were either careless or deliberately unbothered about the reputations of those speaking for them in court.
Nigerians react
Online reactions have been swift, with many users describing the indictment as a “reflection of the rot in the so-called opposition.” Some argue that Atiku and Obi cannot continue to campaign on integrity when those around them are frequently tied to allegations of fraud.
What remains unclear
While the indictment has not yet been backed by official court records or police statements, the fact that the allegation has surfaced at all puts further pressure on Atiku and Obi’s political credibility.
Until there is more clarity, the story reinforces a growing narrative that both men, despite their lofty campaign promises, consistently surround themselves with controversial figures whose legal and financial reputations are far from spotless.
