Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has returned to the country after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and later holding vital diplomatic meetings in Germany.
The Vice President’s jet landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja early Thursday morning, where senior government officials received him.
Strong Push for Global Reforms
At the UNGA, Shettima presented Nigeria’s national address, calling for a comprehensive reform of the international body to ensure Africa enjoys fairer representation in global decision-making processes.
He stressed that African countries must retain sovereignty over their natural resources, estimated at $700 billion in mineral wealth, while appealing for stronger global economic partnerships.
Showcasing Nigeria’s Potential
Shettima engaged world leaders, investors, and international organisations, highlighting Nigeria’s $200 billion worth of energy transition projects to attract foreign capital.
He also held discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who applauded Nigeria’s efforts toward securing a permanent seat at the Security Council.
Additionally, he reassured Nigerians living abroad of their government’s commitment to including them in policies and programs under the Tinubu administration.
Engagements in Germany
The Vice President later traveled to Germany, where he deepened bilateral relations with European stakeholders. His mission focused on strengthening investment inflows, trade relations, and cooperation in tackling international security challenges.
His successful diplomatic shuttle abroad signals Nigeria’s renewed push for global recognition and international collaboration.
