Bayelsa State Governor, His Excellency Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) together with 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
The information was made public by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, through a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday.
Although full details about the move have not been released, sources close to the state government said the governor and the lawmakers are likely to announce their next political direction in the coming days.
According to reports, there are strong indications that the group may be planning to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). The development has already stirred reactions within Bayelsa’s political circle, with many describing it as a major shift in the state’s political alignment.
Governor Diri, who has been a key figure in the PDP since his emergence as governor, is yet to issue an official statement regarding his reasons for the decision. His spokesperson, however, noted that the full details would be made available soon.
The mass resignation marks one of the biggest political movements in Bayelsa State this year, coming at a time when several other high-profile politicians across the country are also leaving the PDP for other parties.
Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
