The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has identified the Abuja Municipal Area Council as her main political focus ahead of the February 2026 area council elections, following her decision to join the African Democratic Congress.
Kingibe made this known on Thursday, December 18, 2025, barely a day after she announced her defection from the Labour Party, a move she said was part of preparations for future electoral contests, including the 2027 general elections.
The senator formally registered as a member of the ADC at her Wuse Ward in AMAC, describing the move as a serious political step rather than a symbolic action. Speaking after collecting her membership card, she said the party must work towards winning all six area councils in the FCT, starting with AMAC.
According to her, the task ahead would require commitment and hard work, stressing that AMAC holds personal importance to her as her local government and ward. She explained that this was the reason she chose to receive her membership card in the area.
The event also featured the presentation of party flags to the ADC chairmanship and councillorship candidates across the FCT, a move seen as a signal of readiness for the February 2026 polls.
Political watchers believe Kingibe’s entry into the ADC could reshape grassroots politics in the Federal Capital Territory, as competition intensifies ahead of the area council elections and the 2027 general polls.
Former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, described the senator’s defection as a major boost to the party, especially in Abuja. He said her decision reflected growing public frustration with the current political order and a desire for change.
Nwosu noted that while the party welcomed Kingibe, it would be careful about admitting new members, adding that the ADC was not interested in politicians motivated only by personal gain. He said the party was focused on building strength with credible figures across the country.
Also speaking, the National Treasurer of the ADC, Mani Ahmed, said the party was prepared for elections at both local and national levels. He explained that widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians had strengthened the party’s resolve to offer an alternative direction.
From the constituency angle, Head of Senator Kingibe’s constituency office and national ex-official representing the FCT, Emmanuel Destiny, said the senator’s move marked a new political phase for residents of the territory, particularly women and young people. He urged them to support her, saying many Nigerians were eager for change due to hardship and insecurity.
