The Independent National Electoral Commission has moved to address the growing leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party by inviting the two opposing factions to an urgent meeting in Abuja.
The meeting, which took place on Friday, 19 December 2025, was held at the headquarters of the electoral body in Nigeria’s federal capital. It brought together representatives of the faction led by former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanimu Turaki, and the group aligned with former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, which is backing Abdulrahman Mohammed.
INEC’s intervention followed weeks of tension within the party, as both factions laid claim to legitimate authority over the PDP’s national leadership structures. The disagreement has raised concerns about the party’s internal stability ahead of future political activities.
Members of the Turaki-led group arrived at the INEC office with key figures from his National Working Committee, officials from the party secretariat, and former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu. Their presence underscored the seriousness of the meeting and the faction’s position in the ongoing dispute.
On the other side, Abdulrahman Mohammed attended with members of his national caretaker committee, including the committee’s secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu. The group maintains that its leadership arrangement is valid and in line with party rules.
Although the meeting was still ongoing at the time of reporting, INEC is expected to play a mediating role aimed at restoring order and clarity within the opposition party. Observers say the outcome of the engagement could determine the direction of the PDP in the coming months.
Further details are expected as discussions progress.
