Six lawmakers in the Zamfara State House of Assembly have left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming internal disputes within their former party and what they described as weak governance in the state.
The lawmakers made their decision known on Thursday, 25 December 2025, through separate letters submitted to the Speaker of the House during plenary.
Those who defected are Bashar Aliyu Gummi, representing Gummi I; Nasiru Abdullahi Maru of Maru North; Bashir Abubakar Masama of Bukkuyum North; Bashir Bello of Bungudu West; Amiru Ahmad Keta of Tsafe West; and Muktar Nasir Kaura of Kaura North.
In their letters, the lawmakers said ongoing crises within the PDP pushed them to quit the party. They explained that the disputes had led to divisions and the emergence of rival leadership structures.
One of the letters stated that the decision to defect was taken because of “lingering and unresolved crises” in the PDP, which had resulted in factional leadership within the party.
The lawmakers added that their action followed constitutional provisions that allow elected officials to change parties when there is a clear division in their party. They referred to Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
They also criticised the PDP-led administration in Zamfara State under Governor Dauda Lawal. According to them, the government has failed to effectively tackle insecurity and has not delivered on key campaign promises made to the people.
The lawmakers maintained that these factors combined made it difficult for them to continue their political activities within the PDP, leading to their move to the APC.
