Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have re-arrested Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, mere moments after he exited Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, where he had been detained on charges related to alleged money laundering. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, following Malami’s completion of bail conditions for his prior detention.
According to reports, Malami had been held in Kuje Prison since late December 2025, facing accusations of stealing and laundering public funds amounting to approximately 8.7 billion naira. He was granted bail by a Federal High Court, but sources indicate he initially hesitated to leave the facility out of fear of immediate re-arrest by security agencies. This fear materialized when DSS agents intercepted him shortly after his release.
A video circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posted by the account @NigeriaStories, captures the chaotic scene outside the prison. The footage shows a group of men in traditional Nigerian attire, including kaftans and embroidered caps, gathered around black SUVs on a dusty road. Malami, identifiable by his distinctive clothing, appears to be escorted or led towards a vehicle amid animated discussions and gestures from security personnel and onlookers. The video, which has garnered significant attention online, aligns with eyewitness accounts of the re-arrest.
