The All Progressives Congress (APC) has indefinitely postponed its scheduled state, local government, and ward congresses in Adamawa State, as revealed in an official letter from the party’s national leadership. The announcement, dated February 17, 2026, was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the account @NigAffairs, sparking speculation about underlying political maneuvers.
In the letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC stated: “We write to inform you of the postponement of the State, Local Government and Ward Congresses for Adamawa State. A new date will be communicated to you in due course.”
The document, bearing the reference APC/NHDQ/INEC/ADMWA/01/26, was signed by Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the National Chairman, and Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru Ph.D., BL, the National Secretary. It concluded with a formal note: “Thank you and please accept the assurances of our highest regards.”
The X post from @NigAffairs, which included images of the letter, described the decision as a “BREAKING” development and suggested a motive tied to ongoing political shifts. “This move is reportedly aimed at allowing Governor Fintiri to complete his planned defection from the PDP to the APC to enable him to become the leader of the party before congresses are held in the state,” the post claimed.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a native of Adamawa—also the home state of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—has not publicly confirmed any intention to switch parties. However, the speculation has fueled discussions among online users, with replies to the post highlighting potential implications for APC’s expansion in the region.
One reply from @Dannymasterp noted: “Wow finally finally APC is finally taking over Atiku Abubakar State (Adamawa) just a month that his own son declared full support for Tinubu’s re-election his own very state Governor has declared support for APC Government and is joining APC.”
Another user, @BabsmayM, added: “Governor Fintiri and Nuhu Ribadu we combine to delivered adamawa state to APC and PBAT,” referring to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The postponement comes at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing increased party defections ahead of future elections. APC officials have not yet provided an official reason for the delay beyond the letter’s contents, and INEC has not issued a response.
As of now, no new dates for the congresses have been announced. Political analysts suggest this could be part of broader strategies to consolidate power in key states, though the party has emphasized that further details will follow.
This development has garnered over 4,000 views on X, with mixed reactions ranging from congratulations to the APC to questions about the timing and its impact on opposition figures like Abubakar.
