The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has cautioned Nigerians to prepare for days of thunderstorms, rainfall, and potential flash flooding, particularly in vulnerable northern and central states.
The three-day forecast, made public on Saturday, indicated that from Sunday morning, parts of Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa will experience moderate rains. As the day progresses, storms will intensify in Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, and other northern states.
“There is a high possibility of flood occurring in parts of Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi states during the forecast period,” NiMet warned.
For the North-Central region, including the FCT, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated, with similar patterns expected in the southern states.
By Monday, thunderstorms are forecast to persist across Bauchi, Kano, Yobe, Katsina, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna. Tuesday will see a continuation of this trend, with moderate rainfall extending into Kaduna, Jigawa, and neighbouring areas.
NiMet urged residents to take precautionary steps, including avoiding driving in stormy conditions and unplugging electrical appliances. It also advised farmers against fertiliser use immediately before rainfall to protect soil nutrients.
