There was a wave of relief in political circles on Monday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio returned from a short vacation in London, ending weeks of speculation about his health.
Akpabio landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 4:00 a.m., where he was received by senators, aides, and a number of supporters who came to welcome him back.
The speculation about his wellbeing had dominated public discussions in recent days, with claims that he was seriously ill and admitted in a London hospital. His reappearance has now quashed those rumours.
Before heading to London, the Senate President was in Geneva between July 29 and 31, where he attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
On arrival in Abuja, Akpabio spoke confidently to the press, assuring Nigerians of “robust legislative engagements” when the Senate resumes plenary sessions.
He also used the opportunity to defend Nigeria’s large delegation to Geneva, saying it was necessary to foster “democratic governance and effective collaboration with the other arms of government.”
His remarks came amid lingering debates over the costs of international political participation. Nonetheless, Akpabio emphasized that Nigeria’s presence on global platforms was vital for democratic dividends at home.
When asked about the rumours surrounding his health, he joked: “If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”
