A fresh wave of crisis has hit the political camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after some of his loyalists announced their resignation over his recent appeal for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The development has stirred strong reactions within the Atiku Support Organisation and related groups, especially among northern coordinators who described Atiku’s statement as “a betrayal of national security.”
According to sources, several members have stepped down from their positions, accusing the former vice president of “supporting separatist views” to gain sympathy ahead of the 2027 elections.
One of the regional leaders who spoke to journalists said, “We supported Atiku for unity, not for appeasing terrorists. His position on Kanu is unacceptable.”
The situation has created unease within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as many party members fear that Atiku’s comment could weaken his northern support base and give political advantage to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As of the time of filing this report, Atiku has not made any official statement regarding the mass resignations.
