“Ina lillahi wa ina illahin raji’un!!!” (From Allah, we come and unto Him is our return)
As the morning Muslim worship was completed, I noticed the tensed face of my brother, who was dishing out instructions to his aides to hasten preparations for an unscheduled return to Abuja. I was puzzled, but before I could ask him what was going on, he quickly turned to me and said, “Ghali is dead,” with a very shaky and emotionally laced voice.
This is surely one of those moments that reminds us about the fact that life is transient. Every beginning has an end. I may not have been a member of the House of Representatives, but I was privileged to have worked with him very closely during his time as the Speaker. I, therefore, wish to use this opportunity to extend my deepest condolence to all those who served our dearest country as members of the House of Representatives from 1999-2003.
As we gather individually and collectively across the nation in somber reflection to bid farewell to a true hero, a man who left an indelible mark on our nation’s history,Rt.Hon.Ghali Umar Na’aba, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was not merely a political figure but an embodiment of integrity, leadership, and unwavering patriotism.
In a time where corruption and greed pervaded the corridors of power, Hon.Na’aba stood tall as a beacon of righteousness. He fearlessly confronted the powers that be, refusing to bend to their will or succumb to their pressures. He never shied away from speaking the truth, even when it meant going against popular opinion or challenging the status quo.
What truly set Hon. Na’aba apart was his ability to unite Nigeria. In a nation divided by tribalism, religion, and political differences, he tirelessly worked towards building bridges and fostering unity. He believed in the power of dialogue and consensus-building, striving to create spaces where our diversities could coexist harmoniously.
For his aides and those who served as members of the House of 1999, they can testify that Hon. Na’aba was a team player par excellence. He recognized the strength in collaboration and understood that progress could only be achieved when individuals put aside personal agendas for the greater good. His leadership style earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues, who looked up to him as a mentor and guide.
Beyond his political achievements, Hon. Na’aba was also a compassionate soul who dedicated his life to the betterment of others. He championed the cause of the marginalized and disadvantaged, using his platform to amplify their voices and fight for their rights. His unwavering commitment to social justice inspired a generation and left an indelible legacy on our nation’s conscience.
Today, as we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, let us remember him not just as a politician but as a shining example of what it means to be a true servant leader. Let us carry forward his spirit of integrity, leadership, and patriotism, and continue the work that he so passionately pursued.
To the House of 1999, this loss is immeasurable. He was not merely a member but a driving force, a guiding light that led us through the darkest of times. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the life he lived, the impact he made, and the legacy he leaves behind.
Hon. Na’aba, thank you for your unwavering dedication and selfless service. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and your spirit will guide us as we navigate the challenges that lie ahead. Rest in peace, dear leader, knowing that your legacy lives on in the united and prosperous Nigeria you helped create.
May Allah grant Rt.Hon.Ghali Umar external rest and the highest rank of Paradise.
