Finidi George has stepped in to lead Nigeria super eagles temporarily as they prepare for friendly matches against Ghana and Mali. With the departure of former coach Jose Peseiro in February, Nigeria’s coaching position has been vacant, prompting a search among more than 20 applicants.
Having previously served as an assistant to Peseiro, Finidi brings familiarity with the team and a wealth of experience to the role. While these friendlies offer him a chance to showcase his coaching abilities, the Nigeria Football Federation emphasizes that the decision for the permanent position will consider various factors beyond just match results.
Despite facing challenges like the absence of key players due to injury, Finidi remains optimistic. His impressive career as a player, including memorable moments like securing Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup finals appearance, highlights his deep connection to Nigerian football.
In addition to his playing achievements, Finidi’s coaching experience with Enyimba, a successful Nigerian club, adds to his credentials. With a UEFA Pro Licence and a track record of success, he is well-equipped to lead the Super Eagles.
