In a revolutionary collaboration aimed at addressing the digital skills gap, Wema Bank has teamed up with the Federal Government of Nigeria to introduce the FGN-ALAT Digital Skillnovation Programme. This ambitious initiative is designed to equip 2,000,000 Nigerian youths and 1,000,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with advanced digital skills, positioning them for success in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Operating in cohorts, the recently unveiled second cohort builds upon the success of the initial launch in 2023. Already, over 300,000 Nigerian youths and business owners have reaped the benefits of the first cohort, utilizing the platform as a springboard for their business and career endeavors.
The inaugural cohort distinguished itself by offering 100% virtual learning sessions, enabling participants from all 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to engage in self-paced online learning experiences. Key digital skills covered included software engineering, product management, business analysis, cloud computing, and product design.
With Cohort 2 commencing in the second quarter of 2024, the programme is officially transitioning to physical training sessions. The curriculum remains focused on essential digital skills, ensuring participants are adequately prepared for the current job market demands.
To enhance accessibility nationwide, the programme will establish FGN-ALAT Digital Hubs across different states within the six geopolitical zones. These hubs will serve as centers for cutting-edge training and incubation facilities, fostering advanced digital-driven learning experiences.
Participants will gain expertise in critical areas such as software development, business analytics, and cloud computing, positioning them competitively within the global digital ecosystem.
Wema Bank’s Executive Director of Retail and Digital Business, Tunde Mabawonku, underscores the programme’s pivotal role in bridging gaps in Nigeria’s macroeconomic landscape. By supporting both entrepreneurial-minded individuals and professionals, the initiative aims to mitigate unemployment and underemployment rates while fostering economic growth.
The FGN-ALAT Digital Skillnovation Programme marks a significant stride towards equipping Nigerian youths and businesses with the requisite digital tools for success. As it transitions to physical training, its potential impact on national development is poised to be substantial.
