-Domestic delivery to be made in Naira -Diesel and fuel aviation already in the market -PMS supply to begin next month
Nigeria is on the brink of an energy revolution with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s latest move to transform the nation’s fuel supply chain. As the continent’s most expansive refinery, it has started distributing refined petroleum, signaling the upcoming launch of in-country gasoline distribution slated for the following month.
The strategic move by the Dangote Group is set to bolster the Nigerian currency, as domestic deliveries will be paid for in naira. This initiative is anticipated to provide a much-needed boost to the local currency, which has faced challenges in the past.
The refinery’s competitive pricing strategy has already made a notable impact, with the pump price of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, dropping to around N1,350/litre in some locations across the country, significantly lower than the previous rates. This price reduction is attributed to the refinery’s own pricing at N1,225/litre, a move that has forced down diesel prices nationwide.
The commencement of petroleum product supply to the local market was confirmed by Devakumar Edwin, Executive Director of the Dangote Group, and further corroborated by representatives of some petroleum marketers’ organizations. The refinery’s operations are a beacon of hope for a country that has long grappled with fuel shortages despite being one of Africa’s largest oil producers.
The Dangote Refinery’s entry into the fuel market is not just a domestic affair. It signifies Nigeria’s potential to become self-sufficient in meeting its fuel needs and also positions the country as a key player in the regional energy market. With plans to export a portion of its refined oil to other African countries, the refinery is poised to contribute significantly to foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria.
As the Dangote Refinery ramps up operations, it is expected to refine an initial capacity of 350,000 barrels per day, with projections to increase to 650,000 barrels when fully operational. The refinery will produce a range of petroleum products, including diesel, jet fuel, automotive fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas.
This development is a milestone for the Dangote Group and a harbinger of economic reform for Nigeria. The refinery’s operations are set to reshape the landscape of the Nigerian fuel market, offering a more stable and economically beneficial future for the nation’s energy needs.
