The Super Eagles Head, Finidi George has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the national senior football team. His resignation comes on the heels of mounting calls and pressures for him to step aside following a string of poor results by the Super Eagles.
Finidi’s resignation may not be unconnected with recent plans the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced a plan to appoint a foreign technical adviser for the team.
Finidi George, who was the Manager of Enyimba FC prior to his appointment as Super Eagles Coach managed only two competitive games as the Eagle coach after his appointment in April.
Under his watch, the Super Eagles drew 1-1 with South Africa at Uyo in his first game while the team suffered a 2-1 loss in the hands of Benin Republic in the second game. Both matches were 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
After the latest round of matches, Nigeria dropped to fifth position in the qualification group, having previously drawn against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. These poor outings have left Nigeria’s hope of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in tatters.
The Minister of sports development, John Eboh had summoned the leadership of the NFF over the shocking results. After the meeting with the Sports Minister, the NFF announced that the appointment of the foreign technical adviser will be done in the coming weeks.
