Following the circulation of a disturbing video showing alleged violent conduct by the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad against suspected touts in Onitsha, the state government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The video has sparked widespread debate and concern among residents and civil rights advocates.
The government, while affirming its zero-tolerance policy toward touting, has emphasized the need for accountability and respect for human rights in law enforcement operations. Dr. Law Mefor, the state Commissioner for Information, addressed the public on behalf of the administration, urging caution in the face of potential misinformation. “In this era of AI and sophisticated disinformation, we urge members of the public to always verify media contents before spreading or holding same as true,” he warned.
He further stated, “The Soludo administration is committed to upholding the rights and dignity of every lawful citizen and resident of Anambra and will not allow any person or group to infringe, or inflict pains unduly upon lawful citizens.”
The government pledged that its efforts to maintain law and order will be conducted with fairness and respect for human rights. The anti-touting squad, popularly called “ndi Akodo,” has been a controversial entity within the state, with ongoing debates about their operational tactics and effectiveness.
