A powerful coalition of opposition politicians convened on July 2, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja to formally unveil their alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), setting the stage for a united challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The event was marked by the presence of key political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi, whose involvement underscores the seriousness of the coalition’s ambitions. Also present were former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, both influential players in Nigeria’s political arena.
Senator Dino Melaye, former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, and PDP chieftain and publisher Dele Momodu were among the other notable attendees. The coalition also included Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe from the Labour Party, along with former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha.
The gathering was further strengthened by the attendance of retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, former Chief of Air Staff, bringing a military dimension to the coalition’s leadership.
The coalition spans multiple political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party (SDP), among others. It has adopted the ADC as its political vehicle, aiming to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Senate President David Mark, who recently left the PDP, is set to lead the coalition as interim national chairman. Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has also been appointed interim national secretary.
This alliance represents a strategic move by opposition leaders to unify their efforts and present a credible alternative to the APC government, signaling a potentially transformative political contest in the years ahead.
