Ahead of the local government elections slated for July 12, 2025, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has made it clear that any disruption caused by ballot box snatching will lead to by-elections in the affected areas.
Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), LASIEC’s Chairman, spoke at a press conference in Yaba, assuring the public of the commission’s readiness to oversee a transparent electoral process across the state’s 57 local councils.
“There will be by-elections if a ballot box is snatched anywhere,” she stated emphatically, adding that although such incidents are not hoped for, the commission is prepared to act decisively if they occur.
The commission also dismissed rumors about any possible postponement of the elections, confirming the July 12 date remains firm.
Security arrangements have been intensified by the Lagos State Police Command, which has deployed thousands of officers to safeguard the polls. Movement restrictions on election day have been revised to start later at 6:00 a.m. and end by 3:00 p.m., a move aimed at easing challenges for residents with urgent medical needs or travel plans.
Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh assured the public of the police’s commitment to a peaceful and orderly election, emphasizing that the force will be vigilant throughout the process.
