In a bold demonstration of political resistance, a coalition of civil society organisations backing Julius Abure’s Labour Party faction has taken to the National Headquarters of INEC, demanding the reinstatement of LP candidates in Nigeria’s forthcoming bye-elections.
Protesters arrived around 11:00 am on Wednesday, chanting slogans and brandishing signs such as “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” and “Tell INEC to obey court orders.”
The protest was triggered by INEC’s refusal to list Labour Party candidates loyal to the Abure-led faction in the upcoming bye-polls scheduled nationwide. Protesters argue that the electoral body is acting in defiance of court rulings which validated those candidates.
A visibly enraged activist among the demonstrators stated, “This is not just about Labour Party; this is about the soul of our democracy. INEC must stop playing politics.”
Observers note that the demonstration reflects growing tension over INEC’s neutrality, particularly amidst internal crises rocking several political parties. INEC has yet to release an official statement in response.
