A social media post by Nigerian political commentator Kawu Garba has stirred public debate after he alleged that the United States government is funding Boko Haram terrorists operating in Nigeria’s northeast region.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Garba wrote:
“If you are wondering where Boko Haram terrorists are getting dollars and sophisticated weapons in Sambisa Forest in Nigeria, the answer is here. Listen to this video as a US member of the representative speaks. It’s the US that is funding them.”
Garba urged his followers to circulate the video and challenge what he described as “hypocrites” who, according to him, “have never been to our country but are being paid to spread the Christian genocide propaganda.”
The post, which quickly gained traction online, references a video clip of a U.S. lawmaker, though the context and authenticity of the claim could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
Boko Haram, an Islamist militant group founded in northeastern Nigeria in 2002, has been responsible for thousands of deaths and widespread displacement across Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. The group’s insurgency has drawn international concern and multiple counterterrorism efforts, including assistance from Western nations.
As of press time, neither the United States Embassy in Abuja nor Nigerian authorities have issued an official response to Garba’s claim.
Observers say the allegation comes amid renewed discussions about foreign influence and misinformation surrounding the Boko Haram conflict and broader narratives of religious persecution in Nigeria.
