Following the announcement of the Anambra State governorship election results, social media users have reacted strongly to the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which recorded 99,445 votes in the poll.
Although Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won by a wide margin, many Nigerians online said the APC’s result showed that the party might not be as unpopular in the Southeast as often claimed.
Several commentators argued that the outcome challenges the claims made by some supporters of the Labour Party and Peter Obi, who are popularly called “Obidients.” According to them, the results indicate that the APC still has a political base in the region.
However, other users said the votes could be due to the strength of internal party structures rather than broad public support.
The Labour Party’s poor performance, coming fourth with only 10,482 votes, sparked further debate on whether political loyalties in the Southeast are beginning to shift.
For many observers, the results of the election reveal a more complex political situation in the region than what is often portrayed on social media.
