The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge to provide houses for members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles team that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, almost two years after the tournament.
The housing allocation was carried out through the National Sports Commission in Fez, Morocco, on Monday, 22 December 2025, just one day before the Super Eagles’ opening match at the 2025 AFCON tournament taking place in Morocco.
Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, then coached by Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, emerged runners up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held from January to February 2024. The Super Eagles lost 2-1 to tournament hosts Ivory Coast in the final match.
Following the team’s return to Nigeria after the competition, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu honoured the players and officials with national awards. Each player and member of the technical and support crew was also promised a house and a plot of land in recognition of their performance.
That pledge was completed at the team’s training base in Morocco as the Super Eagles prepared to begin their campaign for a fourth continental title with a Group C clash against Tanzania on Tuesday, 23 December 2025.
Confirming the development, the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, said the commitment had been fully met by the Federal Government through the National Sports Commission. He stated, “The Federal Government, through the NSC, has fulfilled its 2024 pledge on housing rewards to the Super Eagles.”
Officials present at the presentation included the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi. They confirmed that the national honours were issued in line with existing awards already held by players, while the housing and land grants approved by President Tinubu had been fully processed, with Certificates of Occupancy issued.
The Super Eagles are currently under the leadership of Franco Malian coach Eric Chelle as they compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The team is seeking to win a fourth AFCON title after previous triumphs in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
Nigeria is drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. After their opening match against Tanzania, the Super Eagles will face Tunisia on Saturday, 27 December 2025, before concluding the group stage against Uganda on Tuesday, 30 December 2025.
The team recently missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico, after failing to progress through the qualifiers and African playoff series.
In a similar show of recognition for sporting achievements, President Tinubu earlier this year conferred national honours and awarded a cash reward of $100,000 to each member of the Super Falcons following their victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The President also made comparable promises to Nigeria’s women’s senior basketball team, D’Tigress, after they won a fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in August.
