Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has announced that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will conduct its presidential primaries without zoning arrangements or forced consensus, ensuring an open contest for all aspirants.
In a recent interview on Trust TV’s “30 Minutes” program, El-Rufai emphasized the party’s commitment to transparency and fairness in the selection process for its 2027 presidential flagbearer. “There will be no zoning, no consensus, and no forcing anyone to step down. Everyone will be given the opportunity to contest, and whoever wins will be supported by all,” El-Rufai stated.
El-Rufai, who officially joined the ADC in November 2025 after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier that year, highlighted ongoing efforts within the party to build a unified front. He noted that ADC leaders are developing a manifesto and policy platform while engaging presidential, governorship, and other aspirants to foster agreement on free and fair primaries.
The announcement comes amid speculation about potential aspirants, including figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, as opposition parties realign ahead of the 2027 general elections. El-Rufai dismissed concerns about the party’s grassroots strength, urging skeptics to observe National Assembly members’ interactions with constituents.
The statement has sparked varied reactions on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). One user, @chus_dario, remarked, “Kaduna midget has spoken. He should go back to Tinubu camp fully instead of playing the role of a mole in ADC.” Another, @stcsolutions, expressed doubt about the party’s readiness, saying, “This party is not ready. I have a feeling that Atiku has infected the party.” Supporters like @BigDDvibes welcomed the approach: “It’s better, let the best candidate win.”
El-Rufai’s move to ADC and his role in shaping its strategy position the party as a key player in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, potentially challenging the ruling APC.
