Popular Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, known professionally as Simi, is facing widespread backlash after old tweets from 2012 resurfaced on social media, sparking outrage among netizens who described the posts as “creepy” and inappropriate.
The controversy began when screenshots of Simi’s decade-old posts about a four-year-old boy named David went viral on X (formerly Twitter). In one tweet dated March 14, 2012, Simi wrote: “David has a crush on me. He kips comm close; actin lik he wana lock lips n den he puts his head on my lap.Shd I giv him a chance? P.s: Hes 4.”
A reply to that tweet from user @rotexonline at the time warned: “@SymplySimi nigeria HAs a child rights act. If his parents catch you ehn.”
Another tweet from Simi, posted on September 10, 2012, read: “Why this 4yr old boy tryna put hand inside ma shnet???? Ogbenu wash it oh!”
The posts, which appear to jokingly describe interactions with the child in a manner that some interpret as sexualizing him, were highlighted in a report by the Nigerian Tribune, which titled their article “Outrage as Simi’s 2012 post ‘sexualising’ four-year-old boy resurfaces online.” The publication noted the growing anger online, with many accusing the singer of inappropriate commentary.
Nigerians expressed shock and disapproval in responses to the Tribune’s X post. One user, @AfricaTornado, commented: “Simi is a predator.” Another, @osalobuauwese, suggested: “This is making headlines already Omo this is not nice for simi brand She should just apologize and let them end all of this.”
Other reactions included @Oladunniokolo’s “Hmmn” and “Na wa o,” reflecting disbelief, while @mannie_480 wrote: “Omoh una just dey land,” implying the revelations were piling up. User @Rotimi_01 shared screenshots of the tweets alongside a plea: “Let’s protect David at all costs 😩,” accompanied by a meme image.
As of now, Simi has not publicly responded to the resurfaced tweets or the ensuing controversy. The singer, known for hits like “Duduke” and her advocacy on social issues, has a large following on social media, where the posts have garnered thousands of views and engagements.
This incident adds to ongoing discussions about accountability for past online statements, especially among public figures. Social media users continue to debate whether the tweets were harmless jokes or crossed ethical lines, with calls for Simi to address the matter directly.
