Abuja, Nigeria – The main opposition group in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, has criticised the ruling government over its failure to secure the country. This follows a new report that ranks Nigeria as the fourth most affected country in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index.
The Institute for Economics and Peace released the report on Thursday, March 19, 2026. According to the document, the Sahel region of Africa remains the central point for global terrorism. For the third year in a row, the region recorded almost half of all terrorism deaths in 2025.
The data shows that Nigeria experienced 750 deaths from terrorism in 2025. This number represents a 46 percent increase from the deaths recorded in the previous year. Nigeria and four other countries now account for nearly 70 percent of all terrorism deaths in the world.
Ini Ememobong, the spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party, released a statement on Thursday. He noted that the report reflects the poor security situation citizens face every day. Ememobong accused the current leadership of failing in its primary duty to protect the lives and properties of the people.
The opposition party urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action. Ememobong asked the President and security agencies to “adopt a whole-of-society approach towards solving insecurity” instead of only reacting after attacks have happened.
The party also advised the government to create new policies that will stop the violence right away. They stressed that leaders must provide a safe environment where all citizens can live together peacefully without fear
