Police authorities in Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria have arrested two men after uncovering a staged kidnapping involving an 18-year-old woman and her boyfriend.
The arrests were made by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu on Saturday, March 14, 2026, following ongoing investigations into recent criminal cases in the state.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspects, both aged 25, were linked to a conspiracy in which the victim, Mmesoma Ifediora, was falsely declared kidnapped.
She was later found safe in a forest area known as Malaysia Forest in Iruayika, Awkuzu.
During interrogation, she admitted that the incident was arranged with her boyfriend, Obiora Okoye, in a plan to demand ₦3,000,000 (about $1,900) from her parents. The family had already paid ₦240,000 (about $150) before the plot was uncovered.
Investigators said the pair had maintained the deception for about two months by moving between locations and keeping the plan secret. The boyfriend escaped during the police operation and is still being sought.
Recovered items include SIM cards, a WiFi device, clothing, a ritual object, a mobile phone, and materials used to bind the victim.
In another case, police arrested 24-year-old Chukwuebuka Eze on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in connection with a separate kidnapping in Obosi. Authorities said he led a gang that collected ₦150,000 (about $95) before releasing victims and stealing their valuables.
Weapons and ammunition were recovered, and the suspect reportedly confessed and provided information about other gang members.
Police said investigations are ongoing and all suspects will be prosecuted.
