Lagos, Nigeria — The All Progressives Congress is exploring a consensus method to select its governorship candidates for the 2027 elections. At this stage, the current Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, is the leading name for the Lagos race. For Ogun State, Senator Olamilekan Adeola is the top prospect, while Senator Sharafadeen Alli is being considered for the governorship in Oyo State.
These possibilities were discussed during a meeting hosted by President Bola Tinubu at his home in Lagos. The meeting included the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and several state governors. The group focused on preparing for the elections scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission for February 6, 2027.
While an agreement is the preferred path to keep the party united, these selections are not yet guaranteed. In Lagos, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, is still interested in the position. In Ogun, there are different opinions between the current governor and other party leaders about the best candidate. In Oyo, Senator Alli is supported by many because of his experience. More meetings are scheduled for March 27 to discuss how to accommodate all interested members before a final decision is reached.
