The Ministry of Interior has announced a 5-year strategy that it expects would significantly contribute to the country’s fight against insecurity.
At the unveiling on Tuesday, Minister Rauf Aregbesola stated that new data at the ministry’s disposal has underscored the significance of a robust approach in combating insecurity.
“The required synergy to drive internal security has been absent hence the current level of gaps in security management in the country,” he said.
Mr Aregbesola pointed out that the public does not completely comprehend the Ministry of Interior’s responsibility in facilitating internal security.
“These are done through the four services of Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Correctional Service and the Federal Fire Service,” he said.
According to Aregbesola, the impact of these services on the security and well-being of the general public has necessitated a review of the ministry’s existing approach to dealing with insecurity.
“There is the need therefore to have a holistic long-term plan for these agencies and other operating arms of the Ministry for their operations to be enhanced and for them to be more successful in their mission,” he added.
Aregbesola went on to say that the new five-year strategic plan will assist the ministry in identifying gaps in its previous approach and how to better align its resources in order to meet its primary purpose of internal security management and citizenship integrity.
