Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has arrived in Benue State to personally oversee security operations following a deadly wave of attacks that have claimed dozens of lives. In a statement released by the Nigeria Police Force on Monday via X, the IGP announced the deployment of additional tactical teams to the troubled area.
“IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams,” the statement read.
The move comes after a brutal two-day killing spree in Guma Local Government Area, where official reports confirm at least 45 deaths, though local leaders estimate the toll could be much higher, possibly exceeding 200. Reports from the ground describe horrific scenes, including entire families being burned alive and the deaths of security officers.
The killings have provoked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with many citizens and activists demanding that the Federal Government declare a state of emergency in Benue. The public outcry has been fueled by perceived government inaction, especially when compared to the rapid emergency response to unrest in Rivers State earlier this year, which involved no fatalities.
With the Inspector-General’s arrival and the bolstering of tactical units, authorities hope to bring an end to the violence and reassure the people of Benue that their safety is a top priority.
