In a landmark diplomatic engagement, President Bola Tinubu and Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre have pledged to formalize diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saint Lucia. The commitment was made during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Castries, on the second day of Tinubu’s state visit to the island nation.
Tinubu described Saint Lucians as “valued friends and brothers,” underscoring the historical and cultural bonds that unite the two nations. He stressed that these ties are rooted in a shared past and collective resilience, which form the basis for expanding cooperation.
The leaders agreed to focus on key areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education, health, agriculture, and cultural exchange. Tinubu emphasized that strengthening these sectors would enhance bilateral engagement and improve consular services for citizens. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for Small Island Developing States in addressing climate change, disaster preparedness, and development financing on the international stage.
Prime Minister Pierre praised Nigeria’s educational achievements and expressed a desire to deepen academic partnerships, aiming for every household in Saint Lucia to have a university graduate. He also highlighted Saint Lucia’s cultural festivals as platforms for collaboration with Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Both leaders recognized the importance of people-to-people diplomacy and the need for stronger alliances within the Global South to navigate shifting geopolitical landscapes. The visit marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen ties with Caribbean nations and promote sustainable development.
