At a recent thanksgiving event marking the completion of FCT projects, Minister Nyesom Wike delivered a scathing rebuke of the opposition coalition, accusing its leaders of prioritizing personal interests over national progress. He highlighted the frequent party-switching among opposition figures as evidence of their lack of ideological consistency.
“How can Nigerians not be angry with you? You have moved from party to party since 1999. Now in 2025, you switch again. Who are you rescuing? Your stomach, not Nigerians,” Wike stated.
He also questioned the democratic record of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, citing his failure to hold local government elections during his governorship. “For eight years, he was governor; he never conducted local government elections. That is what you describe as democracy?” Wike said.
Wike reflected on the poor performance of some coalition leaders during their time in office, including his own inability to provide infrastructure to his local government despite serving as Senate President for eight years. “Which Nigeria do you want to rescue?” he asked.
The minister criticized the coalition’s record on national debt, corruption, and governance inefficiencies, accusing former ministers of borrowing heavily from China and worsening Nigeria’s economic situation. “You borrowed the future of Nigerians,” he said.
Wike urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to support the current administration under President Bola Tinubu and to reject politicians who have repeatedly failed to deliver. He concluded that the opposition had lost its political relevance and would not regain power.
