The Rivers State House of Assembly Complex project has come under scrutiny following a site inspection by Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the state’s sole administrator. Expressing disappointment with the slow progress, Ibas described the contractor’s work as “grossly abysmal,” highlighting a significant lag behind the agreed timelines.
During his visit on Friday to the Moscow Road construction site in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized the critical nature of the project and the need for accelerated efforts. He also toured prominent sports venues, including the Yakubu Gowon Stadium and Alfred Diete-Spiff Sports Complex, to evaluate their readiness for hosting events.
“The contractor needs to do more,” Ibas stated, underscoring that consultant reports reveal an unsatisfactory pace of work. “I am not satisfied with what I have seen. The pace of work is far below acceptable standards.”
In response to the delays, the administrator has mandated an immediate ramp-up of activities and promised to convene a meeting with the contractor to address bottlenecks and ensure compliance with deadlines.
Ibas also highlighted the importance of sports infrastructure in fostering local talent, noting the state’s athletes’ success on continental stages. He expressed a desire to reduce the need for teams to travel outside the state for competitions by improving local facilities.
The administrator reaffirmed his commitment to infrastructure excellence and accountability, promising upgrades to sporting venues that will support athletes and attract major events.
