A high-level Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London to accompany the body of former President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria. The move comes after President Bola Tinubu’s directive, following Buhari’s death in London on Sunday.
Shettima, joined by Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, was welcomed by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. The development was officially communicated by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Vice President.
President Tinubu, in his announcement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his predecessor and ordered national flags to fly at half-staff in tribute. Buhari, who was 82, led Nigeria both as a democratically elected president and as a former military ruler.
Arrangements have been finalized for Buhari’s burial in Daura, his hometown, according to Islamic customs. The presence of top officials in London highlights the importance attached to honoring the late statesman.
