Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has criticized political aspirants who promise to serve only a single term in office, describing the idea as deceptive and a ploy to manipulate voters.
Speaking in a video shared on social media by Arise TV, Soludo dismissed such pledges as impractical and misleading, stressing that no meaningful government agenda can be fully executed within one term.
“They are playing on people’s intelligence,” Soludo declared. “Those making such promises won’t even be able to scratch the surface of their manifesto if elected.”
The former Central Bank Governor argued that governance is a long-term process that requires consistency, continuity, and strategic planning beyond a single electoral cycle. According to him, any candidate who claims they will achieve lasting transformation within four years is either insincere or attempting to exploit public sentiment.
This is not the first time Soludo has openly ridiculed the one-term promise. In recent engagements, he went as far as suggesting that politicians making such commitments might need psychological evaluation, branding the notion as “political madness.”
Political observers say Soludo’s remarks are not just a critique of campaign rhetoric but also a strategic warning to voters as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. Analysts note that his strong words reflect the increasing intensity of debates around leadership credibility, governance timelines, and the ability of elected officials to fulfill their manifestos.
The comments have sparked widespread reactions across social media platforms. While some Nigerians applauded Soludo’s blunt assessment, others viewed it as an attempt to delegitimize reform-driven candidates who believe in limited tenure as a way of curbing power abuse.
With the 2027 polls drawing closer, Soludo’s stance adds to the growing discourse about political accountability and whether pledges of a one-term government represent genuine sacrifice or empty campaign strategy.
