Public affairs analyst and social reform advocate, Segun Awosanya, widely known as Segalink, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying his recent comments about justice and presidential pardon contradict his earlier positions.
In a statement released on Monday, Segalink reminded the public that Atiku had recently backed activist Omoyele Sowore’s call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing terrorism charges. He, however, questioned why the former Vice President is now speaking against the presidential pardon granted to some individuals jailed for less serious crimes.
“Your Excellency, a few days ago, we witnessed enthusiastic support for your endorsement of my brother Sowore’s agitation for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, despite Mr. Kanu facing serious terrorism-related charges. Today, however, you condemn the Presidential pardon of individuals convicted of comparatively lesser offenses,” Segalink stated.
According to him, Atiku’s recent remarks have caused confusion among Nigerians who now doubt the consistency of his views on justice and governance.
Segalink also wondered if Atiku’s earlier call for Kanu’s release was either misunderstood or a deliberate attempt to align himself with popular opinion without carefully considering its consequences.
“From this condemnation, sir, don’t you think the release of Nnamdi Kanu, as demanded by you in support of Sowore’s position, would be considered reckless, undermine justice, and embolden criminality?” he asked.
The statement has sparked fresh debate among political observers and citizens over the balance between political popularity, justice, and the use of presidential powers in Nigeria.
