Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, says he will rejoin Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, 26 January 2026, days after resigning from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The plan was announced in a statement issued on Sunday, 25 January 2026, and signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who serves as Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Kano, a major commercial city in northern Nigeria.
According to the statement, Yusuf first joined the APC in 2014, when he won the party’s primary for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket, a seat in Nigeria’s National Assembly. The statement added that he later stepped aside for Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure from Kano State and a former governor of the state.
It said that after years of political activity across different platforms, including his most recent time in the NNPP, Yusuf decided to return to the APC based on what the statement described as current realities around governance, national unity, and development. The governor, the statement said, views the APC as a familiar and more structured platform for what it described as progressive governance.
Yusuf also said the move would improve cooperation with Nigeria’s Federal Government, which is led by the APC, and help speed up infrastructure delivery across Kano State. He added that the switch would support stronger security coordination and improve public services for residents.
The governor further said the decision was aimed at strengthening political stability and unity in Kano State.
The statement said Yusuf will formally register as an APC member in Kano on Monday, 26 January 2026, alongside key political office holders. These include 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, and the 44 local government chairmen across the state’s councils.
He is also expected to officially launch the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano State during the same event.
